Most detailers price off a three-size menu and lose money every time a dirty 7-seater rolls up. This calculator prices from what the job actually costs you, then adds your margin on top.
1. Time sets the price
Each service starts from a base time for an average sedan in average condition. Vehicle size multiplies that time: 0.85× for a small car, 1.25× for an SUV or ute, 1.45× for a large SUV or 4WD, 1.6× for a van. Condition multiplies it again: 0.9× for a maintained car, 1.3× dirty, 1.6× for very dirty or pet hair. A dirty large SUV takes 1.45 × 1.3 = 1.89 times as long as the sedan, so it costs 1.89 times as much of your hour.
2. Cost = your pay + products + travel
Estimated hours × your hourly pay is the labour. Products and pad or towel wear scale with vehicle size too (a van uses 1.5× the chemicals of a sedan). Travel is the return distance × your running cost per km or mile.
3. Margin on top, never under your minimum
The recommended price is cost ÷ (1 − margin). At a 30% margin, a $200 job cost becomes a $285.72 price, leaving $85.72 after you are paid for your time. The result never drops below your minimum job price, and GST is added last.
4. Check your menu
Enter your current menu price and the calculator tells you whether it covers cost and margin for that vehicle. The table under the quote shows the same job across all five sizes, which is a ready-made size-based price list.
Enter every cost and price ex GST. The GST switch shows prices, fees and takings with or without GST; costs and profit always stay ex GST. Set the rate to 0 if you are not registered.
